Festive Spanish Vocabulary

The Jewish festival of Hanukkah lasts for eight days sometime between late November and the end of each year. The dates vary because they are not based on the Gregorian calendar, aka solar calendar. Hanukkah begins on the 25th of Kislev, the ninth month in the Hebrew calendar.

How do you say Hanukkah in Spanish?

Spanish, unlike English and French, has a sound equivalent to the H at the begining of Hanukkah, which means there is a single correct Spanish spelling: janucá.

So "Happy Hanukkah!" is ¡Feliz janucá!

Hanukkah is also known by two other names:

  1. The Festival of Lights – la Fiesta de las Luminarias
  2. The Feast of Dedication – la Fiesta de la dedicación
