Oír means "to hear" and is used just like its English counterpart:

Por ejemplo…

¿Puedes oír eso?    Can you hear that?
Le oigo abrir la puerta. I hear him opening the door.
No oye lo que no quiere oír. He doesn’t hear what he doesn’t want to hear.
¿Me oís? Do you hear me?
