Are you looking for an international Spanish language qualification that’s a little more convenient than the DELE? Then the SIELE exam might be just what you’re looking for.

Only 7 years old, the SIELE is a modern exam from the Instituto Cervantes. It uses computer software to test your skills, rather than an in-person examiner. That makes it much easier to schedule than a DELE exam.

For those to whom this new approach to language testing appeals, we’ve created a brief guide to the SIELE exam. Read on to understand how it works, how to take it, and how to study for it.

How Does the SIELE Exam Work?

Unlike the DELE exam, you don’t have to pick your level beforehand. Depending on how well you do, you’ll be awarded one of the CEFR standard grades. These are:

  • A1 – Breakthrough
  • A2 – Waystage
  • B1 – Threshold
  • B2 – Vantage
  • C1 – Effective Operational Proficiency

You cannot fail the exam. The lowest grade possible is A1.

There’s no C2 grade available, as that level of skill is challenging to test with computer software. C1 grade Spanish though is plenty sufficient for international business settings.

How to Take the SIELE Exam

The SIELE’s modern approach is all about efficiency. In the UK, all you have to do is book a date online to take the exam at the Instituto Cervantes. After the exam, you should receive your results in three weeks or less!

Advantages of a SIELE Qualification

SIELE awards expire every 5 years. While some see this as a disadvantage, it actually proves that your language skills are current. After all, an employer might not put much weight on a 20-year-old DELE grade.

Just a small word of caution: the SIELE exam is relatively new in the language testing world. So if you need a Spanish language qualification for a specific organisation, check first that they accept this newer award.
