The Day of the Dead comes from a fusion of two traditions: Pre-Columbian Mexican and European Catholic.

Los orígenes mexicanos de estas ceremonias surgieron hace unos tres mil años en las etnias mexica, maya, purepecha y totonaca. |
Translation
The Mexican origins of these ceremonies emerged some three thousand years ago in the Mexica, Maya, Purepecha, and Totonaco ethnic groups.

Nuestros antepasados celebraban dos fiestas en distinctas épocas del año. La primera, llamada Miccalihui Tontli, dedicada a difuntos más pequeños, y la segunda, Ueymicaihuitl, dedicada a los espíritus adultos. | Translation
Our ancestors celebrated two holidays at different times of the year. The first, called Miccalihui Tontli, was dedicated to younger deceased persons, and the second, Ueymicaihuitl, was dedicated to adult spirits.

Cuando los colonizadores españoles llegaron a América, consideraban que las tradiciones relacionadas con la muerte eran barbáricas y paganas; por lo que, como parte de la evangelización del nuevo mundo, introdujeron sus propias costumbres y celebraciones para recordar a los muertos. | Translation
When Spanish colonists arrived in America, they found the traditions related to death barbaric and pagan; that’s why, as part of the evangelization of the New World, they introduced their own customs and celebrations to remember the dead.

Para ello, eligieron el 1° y 2 de noviembre, fechas que habían sido dictaminadas por la iglesia católica en el siglo 9 para ese fin. Pronto los indígenas adoptaron la tradición católica y en México se continuó celebrando a los niños defuntos el primero y a los adultos el 2 de noviembre. | Translation
For that, they chose the 1st and 2nd of November, dates which had been established by the Catholic church in the 9th centruy for this purpose. The natives soon adopted the Catholic tradition and in Mexico they continued celebrating deceased children on the 1st and adults on the 2nd of November.

Over time, these holidays spread around the world and on 7 November 2003, Day of the Dead was named an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
