Conjugaciones del pretérito: verbos regulares

Most regular Spanish -ar, -er, and -ir verbs are conjugated with a standard root (found by dropping the infinitive) plus the appropriate endings.

Regular –ar verbs

The pretérito endings for regular –ar verbs are:

  • -aste
  • -amos
  • -asteis
  • -aron

Por ejemplo…

hablar (to talk)

 

mirar (to look at)

hablé   miré
hablaste   miraste
habló   miró
hablamos   miramos
hablasteis   mirasteis
hablaron   miraron

Verbs that end in –car, –gar, or –zar take on a spelling change in the yo form of the pretérito:

  changes to
c qu
g gu
z c

Por ejemplo…

tocar (to play)

 

pagar (to pay)

 

rezar (to pray)

toqué   pagué   rezecé
tocaste   pagaste   rezezaste
tocó   pagó   rezezó
tocamos   pagamos   rezezamos
tocasteis   pagasteis   rezasasteis
tocaron   pagaron   rezezaron

Regular –er verbs

The pretérito endings for regular –er verbs are:

  • -iste
  • -ió
  • -imos
  • -isteis
  • -ieron

Por ejemplo…

comer (to eat)

 

deber (to have to)

comí   debí
comiste   debiste
comió   debió
comimos   debimos
comisteis   debisteis
comieron   debieron

Regular –ir verbs

The pretérito endings for regular –ir verbs are identical to those for –er verbs:

  • -iste
  • -ió
  • -imos
  • -isteis
  • -ieron

Por ejemplo…

vivir (to live)

 

partir (to leave)

viví   partí
viviste   partiste
vivió   partió
vivimos   partimos
vivisteis   partisteis
vivieron   partieron
