The Spanish present perfect is used just like its English counterpart: to express that something has happened at some point before now.
Por ejemplo…
¿Has visitado México? | Have you visited Mexico?
Sí, he visitado México. | Yes, I have visited Mexico.
Siempre hemos comido a las nueve. | We have always eaten at 9. |
The present perfect is often used with adverbs of frequency, ya (already), and todavía no (not yet).
Ya he visitado España. | I have already visited Spain.
Todavía no he visitado México. | I haven’t visisted Mexico yet. |
In Spain, you can also use the present perfect with specific times, dates, days, and years:
Hemos visitado Chile tres veces. | We have visited Chile three times.
Ana ha ido al médico ayer. | Ana went to the doctor yesterday. |
Latin Americans, however, would use the pretérito for these last examples – learn more.
