The Spanish imperative conjugations for and vosotros are different depending on whether the imperative is affirmative or negative.

Regular -AR verbs

Negative Imperative

Negative commands for and vosotros follow the same pattern as the imperative of other subject pronouns: take the present tense of the verb and change the A at the beginning of the suffix to E.

Present tense Imperative
tú estudias   no estudies
vosotros estudiáis no estudiéis

affirmative

Take the present tense and drop the final S:

Present tense Imperative
tú estudias estudia

Vosotros affirmative

Take the infinitive and replace the final R with D:

Infinitive Imperative
estudiar estudiad

En resumen …

  Affirmative Negative
estudia no estudies
vosotros estudiad no estudiéis

Regular -ER verbs

Negative Imperative

Negative commands for and vosotros again follow the same pattern as the imperative of other subject pronouns: change the E at the beginning of the suffix to A.

Present tense Imperative
tú bebes   no bebas
vosotros bebéis no bebáis

affirmative

Take the present tense and drop the final S:

Present tense Imperative
tú bebes bebe

Vosotros affirmative

Take the infinitive and replace the final R with D:

Infinitive Imperative
beber bebed

En resumen …

  Affirmative Negative
bebe no bebas
vosotros bebed no bebáis

Regular -IR verbs

These are a little more complicated, but still mostly based on the present tense.

negative

Take the present tense and change the E at the beginning of the suffix to A.

Present tense Imperative
tú abres   no abras

affirmative

Take the present tense and drop the final S:

Present tense Imperative
tú abres abre

Vosotros negative

Take the present tense and change Í to ÁI.

Present tense Imperative
vosotros abrís no abráis

Vosotros affirmative

Take the infinitive and replace the final R with D:

Infinitive Imperative
abrir abrid

En resumen …

  Affirmative Negative
abre no abras
vosotros abrid no abráis

Notes

  • Affirmative commands follow the same pattern for all three types of regular verbs.
  • The imperative endings for -ER and -IR verbs are identical.
  • The vast majority of Spanish imperative conjugations are the same as subjunctive conjugations.
