Spanish reflexive prepositional pronouns are pronouns which refer back to the subject and occur after prepositions, often in order to emphasize the noun they replace.
Singular | Plural | |||
mí | myself | nosotros | ourselves
ti | yourself | vosotros | yourselves
sí | himself herself itself yourself |
sí | yourselves themselves |
The first and second person singular and plural reflexive prepositional pronouns are the same as the non-reflexive prepositional pronouns. However, the reflexive pronoun for all of the third person singular and plural forms is sí.
Por ejemplo…
Compré un regalo para mí. | I bought a present for myself.
Hablas nunca de ti. | You never talk about yourself.
Vamos a construir la casa para nosotros. | We’re going to build the house for ourselves.
Lo quieren todo para sí. | They want it all for themselves. |
All of the reflexive prepositional pronouns can be followed by the adjective mismo (or misma/mismos/mismas – depending on the gender and number of the subject) in order to emphasize the reflexive aspect.
Por ejemplo…
Quiero hacerlo para mí mismo. | I want to do it for myself.
Ellas hablan mucho de sí mismas. | They talk a lot about themselves. |
Sí can mean "yourself" (with Ud.), "yourselves" (with Uds.), or "himself, herself, itself, themselves, oneself."
Por ejemplo…
Uds. deben hacerlo por sí. | You have do you it yourselves.
Él lo quiere todo para sí mismo. | He wants it all for himself.
Debe que mirar por sí. | One has to look out for oneself. |
Notes
1. Con + sí contract into consigo: Está contento consigo – He’s happy with himself.
2. If the subject and pronoun do not refer to the same person, use non-reflexive prepositional pronouns.
