Ello is the Spanish neuter tonic pronoun, used to mean "it" or "this" after a preposition when referring to something non-specific, such as a situation or idea.

Por ejemplo…

Tomemos nota de ello.   Let’s make a note of this.
No tengo ganas para ello.   I don’t feel like it.

Remember that when you’re referring to someone or something specific, you need the personal tonic pronoun él or ella, depending on the gender of the noun.

 Compare…

Todo fue difícil – no quiero hablar de ello. Everything was difficult – I don’t want to talk about it.
     vs
La escuela fue difícil – no quiero hablar de ella. School was difficult – I don’t want to talk about it.

¿Qué vas a hacer?
No te preocupes por ello.
What are you going to do?
Don’t worry about it.
     vs
¿Dónde está tu libro?
No te preocupes por él.
Where is your book?
Don’t worry about it.

Ello is also the neuter subject pronoun.
