Te amo

Meaning   I love you (romantic)
Register   normal
Pronunciation Spanish sound files [tay ah moh]
IPA   [te ‘a mo]

Usage notes: The regular –ar Spanish verb amar means "to love" in a romantic sense: you use it with someone you are in love with – such as your spouse or partner.

  • Te amo, mi amor. – I love you, my darling.
  • Te amo mucho. – I love you very much.

  • Te amo también. / Yo también, te amo. – I love you, too.

Te amo is too intense for non-romantic relationships (family, friends) – to say "I love you" to them, use the expression te quiero.
