Polite Spanish Expression
|Meaning||enjoy your meal|
|Pronunciation||[bwayn proh vay cho]|
|IPA||[bwɛn pro betʃo]|
Usage notes: In Spain, you are likely to hear buen provecho only in restaurants, and only from waiters. Unlike its French equivalent bon appétit, buen provecho is not generally used between friends, who instead wish each other a good meal with the synonymous expression que aproveche.
Mexicans use the expression buen provecho with everyone – waiters to customers, friends to each other, even strangers seated nearby.
It’s polite to respond gracias, igualmente (thank you, likewise).
Synonym: ¡Buen apetito! (literally, "good appetite")
